Agency disavows report on Iraq arms -- The Washington Times

"The International Atomic Energy Agency says that a report cited by President Bush as evidence that Iraq in 1998 was "six months away" from developing a nuclear weapon does not exist."

You are being lied to.

Think You Have a Book in You? Think Again

"According to a recent survey, 81 percent of Americans feel they have a book in them — and that they should write it. As the author of 14 books, with a 15th to be published next spring, I'd like to use this space to do what I can to discourage them."

Prospective authors take note! If this yahoo can get published in the New York Times, so can you!

A fantastic feat of engineering enables the zeppelin to pump out a continuous stream of condensation, allowing the zeppelin to create a massive thundercloud that surrounds the vessel and hides it from spectators on the ground -- and from the eyes of the Banished's followers. About a week ago I found out that anarchy online has been offering a week free to anyone who'll try their game. I tried it, and I like it. Nevertheless, there were a few thing lacking. So I composed a post for the anarchy forums giving my take on anarchy online and what it needs to do to improve.

Classic screens in Seattle

"Comedy-great Harold Lloyd's 1928 last silent film, "Speedy," will have a special Seattle showing on Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Egyptian Theatre with live musical accompaniment by the Alloy Orchestra."

A few weeks ago, we went to see Harold Lloyd's 'Girl Shy' at the Paramount. It was simply the funniest comedy I have ever seen, hands down.

Firefighters, police worried by planned cuts

"Public safety remains one of the core missions of city government, Mayor Greg Nickels said yesterday, but the budget cuts he suggests are alarming the men and women who patrol the streets and put out the fires."

In today's news: kittens are cute.

Star Wars

"The game will also provide a host of randomly generated missions. These will be available to give players something fun to do whenever they log on and is a way of getting some quick credits. An example would be an NPC farmer having trouble with womp rats chewing on his harvester power cables; he asks the player to go take out the nest. On the way to the womp rat lair, chances are the player may encounter one of our Points Of Interest, such as a roving band of Tusken Raiders hunting down a human who cries to the player for help. "

Black Mountain, Australia

"This is 'the Mountain of Death.' Aborigines will not go near it. An ancient legend warns them of danger. White men fear it too, because of the numbers of men who have gone there and disappeared without a trace, as if the earth -- or the mountain - - had swallowed them. Birds and animals shun the area."

Oh, and comments may be working again. Please try them out!

I don't like the people of Seattle. Last night we went down to Meany Hall to hear Sarah Vowel read. It was a good show. And then people chose the question and answer period to admonish her for using TicketMaster and to ask her to justify drinking Starbuck's coffee. These are the kind of people who wear their social conscience on their sleeves. They believe strongly, and they want you to know how much they suffer for it. They view it as a mark of their superiority and they want everyone to acknowledge it. I wanted to shout "Sarah Vowel isn't here to validate your conscience. She doesn't care about your moral crusades because she's too busy writing books."

"I used to spend my afternoons watching the Real World. [...] It wasn't so bad. I had a great roommate, a beautiful gay man who cooked for me and signed his emails “Your boyfriend.” We attended important dinner parties together and he drove me home as I slumped in the passenger seat, drunk and chatty. Or maybe I used to watch The Real World back when I lived alone, when I ate frozen dinners, when I drove myself home from dinner parties and woke up regretting everything."

Shug's Expedition OutPost #2: Tusken Conga - Star Wars Galaxies

"Gradually, a number of Tusken-Bantha pairs form a larger group. This small, frightening army begins patrolling the large sand bowl. Remarkably, as the Tuskens march across the desert, they move single-file to hide their numbers. The Star Wars geek in me is giddy."

It WILL be good.

"A stunning admission by the leader of North Korea that his country kidnapped 12 Japanese -- eight of whom have died -- cleared the way for a historic agreement today with Japan. "

Comments are back!

After a little server tweaking, I've got comments again. So lets take attendance. If you've been reading this blog, click the comments link below and say Hi!

UPDATE: No, comments aren't back. Damn webserver.

I downloaded a demo today. I do this alot. I probably check out a dozen games a week. Only a few of these are downloaded demos. Some are web games. Some are puzzle games. Often I'll go to FilePlanet and see what downloads are popular. Sometimes a game's site will force me to use fileplanet to download. I refuse to pay $6 a month (or whatever it is) for fast downloads, so I usually have to wait 45 minutes to start my download and then another half hour for the download to complete. Yet after all this, I almost always find that within 6 seconds of starting, the game is not worth playing. I'd say that I find a game that holds my attention for as much as an hour as rarely as once a month. So why are people bothering to make these games? Some of them don't even hold up to the standards of 2, 3 or even 5 years ago.

"Dear Shattered Galaxy players,

One year ago America was attacked in one of the largest terrorist attacks ever. In memory of the people who lost their lives, as well as to remember personal friends and family, Shattered Galaxy will have a day of Remembrance.

As a symbol of peace and solidarity, at noon PDT on September 11, 2002 will be changing Crater on all planets to a non-battle zone for 30 minutes. Players from all factions will be able to meet and share with each other without worries of combat in this zone.

During this time we are inviting old Shattered Galaxy players back to visit with friends they left behind in the game. All expired accounts will be registered for free starting the evening of September 10th, and ending on the morning of September 12th. People who currently have accounts will have the accounts extended by one day as well.

We invite everybody to attend and hope you will take this opportunity to remember the past, and to cherish the future.

White House: Bush misstated report on Iraq

"Seeking to build a case Saturday that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was developing weapons of mass destruction, President Bush cited a satellite photograph and a report by the U.N. atomic energy agency as evidence of Iraq’s impending rearmament. But in response to a report by NBC News, a senior administration official acknowledged Saturday night that the U.N. report drew no such conclusion, and a spokesman for the U.N. agency said the photograph had been misinterpreted."

How can the White House ask for emergency powers to protect us, then continually betray our trust?

Farscape Cancelled!

I do have my quibbles with Farscape, but all in all it's one of the best Sci-Fi shows out there. This may just be a rumor, but maybe you'd better sign the petition now!

Update: As Philos pointed out, Sci-Fi Channel just renewed Farscape for two more seasons. The press release is here. Still no news if the cancellation is real.

Update: Scifi.com's official Farscape page has no official announcement as yet.

Thanks to denormalize and metafilter for pointing this one out.

Metaphilm - Fight Club

"In the film Fight Club, the real name of the protagonist (Ed Norton’s character) is never revealed. Many believe the reason behind this anonymity is to give "Jack" more of an everyman quality. Do not be deceived. "Jack" is really Calvin from the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. It’s true. Norton portrays the grown-up version of Calvin, while Brad Pitt plays his imaginary pal, Hobbes, reincarnated as Tyler Durden."

The Seattle Times: New wildfire plan watchdog has unorthodox views

"The man chosen to head the Bush administration's wildfire prevention program doubts the existence of ecosystems and says it would not be a crisis if the nation's threatened and endangered species became extinct."

Shouldn't the guy hired to solve the wildfire problem at least have a clue about environmental science? On the other hand, I'll bet his pseudo-scientific claptrap was a big hit in gard school seminars and Libertarian keggers.
